Crabgrasses
Common: Large Crabgrass (Hairy Fingergrass), Smooth Crabgrass (Fingergrass, Smooth Summergrass), Southern Crabgrass (Summergrass)
Scientific: Digitaria sanguinalis, Digitaria ischaemum, Digitaria ciliaris
Affected Crops: Corn, cotton, soybeans, tobacco, and fruits, trees, vegetables.
Identification:
- Large Crabgrass - Seedling sheaths and blades are
densely hairy. Leaf blades are usually 3-20 cm long and hairy on both
surfaces. Seedlings emerge in May and June.
- Smooth Crabgrass - Seedling blades and sheaths are smooth. Leaf blades are smaller than large Crabgrass.
- Southern Crabgrass - Seedling leaves, sheaths and
collars are hairy. Leaf blades are 5-18 cm long, with the upper surface
on the upper leaves occasionally being hairy.
Geographical Distribution: Large
Crabgrass tends to grow in the lower South. Smooth Crabgrass is
widespread throughout the United States. Southern Crabgrass is found
mostly on field borders of the South, and up to Connecticut and
Nebraska.
