Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why has Spartan® received Section 18 Specific Exemption labeling?
A. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits Spartan herbicide to be used in sunflower fields where kochia infestations will cause economic loss if not controlled. Because there is a lack of approved products for use in conservation tillage programs, the EPA has allowed a special exemption for Spartan, a product that has been proven effective.

Q. What states have received the Section 18 labeling for the 2002 crop season?
A. Spartan has been approved for use in Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana.

Q. How effective is Spartan?
A. Spartan herbicide has been shown to provide greater than 85% control of kochia, as well as other yield-threatening broadleaves, such as Russian thistle and various pigweeds.

Q. How does Spartan work?
A. Spartan herbicide contains the active ingredient sulfentrazone. It works as a protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitor, disrupting the enzyme system necessary for the production of chlorophyll. Most weeds die as they begin to emerge from the soil. The rest die immediately thereafter, when they're exposed to the light.

Q. How do I determine the amount of product to use?
A. Your use rate will depend upon soil type and the amount of organic matter present. Suggested rates appear below. If you're applying Spartan 14 to 30 days before planting, use the higher of the approved rates for your soil type. Additional recommendations appear on our Stewardship page. Organic Matter Coarse Soil Medium to Fine Soil a.i./A oz. Prod/Acre a.i./A oz. Q. How soon can I rotate other crops into Spartan-treated fields?

Crop Rotation Interval Soybeans Anytime Wheat 4 months (Barley, Rye, Oats and Triticale) Corn 10 months (Field, Pop and Seed) Sorghum 10 months Alfalfa 12 months Cereal Grains 12 months (Buckwheat, Pearl Millet, Proso Millet, Teosinte and Wild Rice) Sweet Corn 18 months Canola 24 months Sugar Beets 36 months
